Established over 125 years ago, Swedish Covenant Hospital first opened in Chicago, Illinois under the name “Home of Mercy”. Documented as originally having only 12 iron beds, two wooden washstands, and a limited number of other amenities, Swedish Covenant has since undergone a series of expansions and transformations.

From the beginning, Swedish Covenant has been dedicated to the physical, spiritual, and psychological needs of its patients. Committed to serving the North and Northwest of Chicago, the hospital acts as an academic and community healthcare facility that offers an extensive list of medical programs, including cancer, cardiac, surgical, women’s health, and emergency services. Today, the independent, nonprofit hospital supports a staff of 2,200 employees, 550 physicians, and 250 volunteers.

In addition to its medical advances, Swedish Covenant has also undergone structural modernization as well. To cut down on maintenance costs and increase aesthetic appeal, Metal Design Systems, Inc. fabricated ALPOLIC aluminum composite panels to be featured on the exterior fascia of the building. The panels, in three custom colors, provide the historic hospital with a sleek and contemporary appearance.

Swedish Covenant has also made significant progress in the sustainability of the building. To conserve energy and reduce toxins, motion censors, mercury-free light fixtures, and green motors were installed throughout the hospital. Additionally, the roof features tiles made of light reflecting material that naturally prevent the building from overheating.
