Great architectural design should be distinctive and pull inspiration from its surroundings.

When the award-winning Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) decided to expand its services with a new facility in The Woodlands, a planned community located in the heavily forested region north of Houston, the lush landscape was clearly a source of inspiration for FKP Architects.  The resulting state-of-the-art facility’s overall concept was based on the theme “Spirit of the Woods,” and that concept can be seen in every aspect of the interior and exterior design.

In front of the main entry, just beyond its iconic and colorful yard lettering, stands a unique 22-foot-tall, curved leaf-shaped canopy. At 48-feet wide and 60-feet long, this massive design required an innovative product that was easy to route, fold and bend. It needed to be flexible and lightweight, yet rigid and strong. The project’s fabricator, Byrne Metals, chose ALPOLIC® materials to bring the design to life.

“The complex canopy shape showcases the design flexibility that architects love when using composite panels,” said Michael Boeck, Byren Metals’ operations manager and project manager for the project.

Boeck selected ALPOLIC® because of its unmatched color options, value, quality, and dedicated sales and service team. “We love our sales manager, Tom Ratway, and have been working with him for years. ALPOLIC® is always an easy choice for us.”

For this project, Bryne fabricated and installed nearly 36,000 square feet of ALPOLIC®/fr (fire resistant) metal composite materials in Champagne Metallic (CMX), helping make the building both safe and beautiful. The six-floor, 560,000 square-foot, $98 million facility was completed in February 2017 and offers both inpatient and outpatient services.
